A new ranking from MLB.com names Colorado Rockies’ Nolan Arendao the best third baseman in the major leagues. Thank goodness.
Baltimore Orioles fans have been living with some anxiety lately. Our hot-shot third baseman, Manny Machado, would enter free agency after 2018. Not only that, he was the best third baseman in the major leagues and everyone knew it. Every other team in existence would have a reason to try to swoop in and snatch him up.
Not so anymore. Lucky for us, Machado’s stats dropped in 2017. As cited at Birdswatcher.com, Machado’s WAR, the sabermetrics uber-statistic, was half of Arenado’s. And his offensive stats put him behind several other third basemen. That theoretically lowers his price tag and reduces competition from other clubs.
So here’s the stupid thing I’m hoping for: a good but not unbelievable season from Machado in 2018. Or, if he’s going to reclaim his throne, at least let the O’s make it to the World Series before we kiss him goodbye.
