Top Stories: Police Say Hopkins Student Fell from High-Rise, Fed Hill Bars Discourage Helping Panhandlers, DeRay Mckesson Leaving City Schools Gig

The most-read piece on our site this week was a sad update about the death of a 19-year-old student athlete at Johns Hopkins University. Abigail Bastien “fell from quite a distance” from a high-rise on N. Charles Street to her death, Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith said at a news conference on Monday. Bastien’s body had been discovered on the morning of Thursday, July 13.

Smith said investigators weren’t sure exactly high up she was before her fall. The evidence detectives pulled together indicated it was an accidental death, he said, noting that “nothing in this case points towards homicide.”

Members of the Hopkins community and Bastien’s hometown of Sandusky, Ohio, mourned her passing. Bastien was a sprinter on the Hopkins track-and-field team and a member of the school’s Alpha Phi sorority chapter. Her high school track coach told the Sandusky Register she “was a person with a heart of gold and was all about everyone first and putting herself second.”
