Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No…it’s…. an entire weekend of aerial performance! That’s right. That most exciting and special genre of performance—blending dance, theatre, circus, and well, flight, is coming to Artscape all weekend long. This year, aerialists (that’s what those death-defying trapeze and silks wielding acrobat dancers are called) have their very own venue where you can catch any number of spectacular performances all weekend long.
Curated by Daydreams + Nightmares Aerial Theatre (DNA Theatre), the Aerial Arts Arena is high above Charles Street, hosting a diverse array of movement and dance on aerial cloth, trapeze, hoop, and a number of other apparatuses. After hours, you can swing by (no pun intended) for music from live DJs as part of Artscape’s late night offerings. Some highlights of the weekend include Gris by Vaudoux Aerial Dance Theatre, presenting a 40-minute ensemble performance that celebrates the cultures and traditions of New Orleans as it searches the narrow passageways of connection, loss, and elusive forgiveness. Baltimore’s own Ascension Arts will present The Secret Life of Dolls, exploring a day in the life of toys that get left behind when their owners leave their sight. But there’s plenty more magic and marvel beyond these two groups, available for your entertainment today, tomorrow, and Sunday. And since it’s Artscape, all you need to do is show up and look up.
The Aerial Arts Arena is part of Artscape, which takes place from July 17-20. The Aerial Arts Arena is located at the intersection of Charles and Preston Streets. For more information, visit www.artscape.org.
