Baltimore is moving up another ranking. We’ve had a lot of lists about where to grab a bite in Baltimore, but this one is about what’s looking to bite us.
Orkin’s ranking of the Top 50 Mosquito Cities is a real list, and it placed Baltimore at 28th. That’s up nine spots from last year. The list is based on the number of customers who received mosquito treatments in the last year. While the still-intact swamp of DC and big cities like Chicago and New York are all in there, Southeast cities dominated the list with 21 of the 50 entries.
The list comes with some ways to discourages the skeeters from swarming in your area, like removing standing water, wearing loose-fitting clothing and of course breaking out the DEET. In this particular city, there’s cutting-edge work that could lead to new kinds of solutions. Researchers at Johns Hopkins are learning more about why mosquitoes think we taste good, which may pave the way for a new kind of bug spray.
