Three homicides in Baltimore on Sunday brought May’s total to 43, more killings in a single month in the city since August 1972, when 45 were killed. But that’s comparing raw numbers.

As the Baltimore Sun pointed out, in 1972, Baltimore had somewhere around 908,000 residents. Today we have around 620,000. If you consider the per-capita homicide rate, May was Baltimore’s deadliest month ever.

On Friday, writer and former Baltimore police officer Peter Moskos ranked Baltimore’s deadliest months per capita at his Cop in the Hood blog. According to his figures, May 2015 is followed by August 1990 and August 1996.
