Sad but true: not many of us are destined to celebrate our birthdays (or graduations, or weddings, or anniversaries) with an actual, bona fide Charm City Cake. Those confectionery works of art are just not everyday affairs, unfortunately. But that’s not to say that your homemade versions can’t have all of the decadence and creativity that go into the cakes that put Baltimore’s cake culture on the map. In fact, if you were to attend the whole slew of cake decorating classes that Charm City Cakes has this month, you may well be able to give Duff and company a run for their money by the time you’re done.
What exactly is on offer this month? A variety of cake decorating classes inspired by this year’s trendiest designs (and yes, there are trends in cake fashion). Participants will learn a variety of decorating techniques and hone their skills in classes led by the bakery’s veteran decorators. The month kicks off with a dreamy “Endless Summer” surf-themed cake class. Perfect for those starting to wilt as the days get shorter. Then, back by popular demand are the Shabby Chic Cupcake and Ombré Ruffle cake classes. And finally, for those looking to really show off and flex their decorating prowess, there will be a class inspired by the sweet tooth of Queen Marie Antoinette. Fitting, since didn’t she say, “Let them eat well-decorated, exquisitely crafted cake” or something?
Charm City Cakes is located at 2936 Remington Avenue in Baltimore. Classes require advanced reservations and space is limited. Classes are held Saturdays at 11 a.m. For more information, or to sign up, visit www.charmcitycakes.com.
