15 Under $15: Wines You’ll Love That Won’t Break the Bank

wine poured into glass

Welcome to our new occasional series “15 Under $15” by wine enthusiast and restaurateur Tony Foreman (who knows a thing or two about wine).  Tony owns wine shop Bin 604 in Harbor East and is a partner in Foreman Wolf, which owns and operates restaurants Charleston, Cinghiale, Pazo, Petit Louis and Johnny’s.

The priorities in assembling the below list were first and foremost flavor (as in a lot of it for the price) and secondly, versatility with food and typicity of place.  –Tony Foreman

Inspired Habitat: Make a resolution for a clean, green 2013

2013 goals

Ah, New Year’s resolutions… it’s easy to think about all the big changes you plan to make, but most of us give up on our big plans by the time February rolls around. The key to making resolutions you can stick to is to make them easy and achievable. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of 13 easy resolutions for a clean, green 2013.

Post-Christmas Sale at Halcyon House

Halcyon House

catch of the day fish (2)So the bulk of our holiday season is over. We’re in the home stretch, now. And we’re in that perfect moment when the shopping and gift-opening is done. The decorations were hung long ago. We’ve hosted or attended any number of gatherings. And we cannot help but take stock. I mean, you know that feeling when your guests are beginning to flood the dining room and you’re suddenly thinking, “I could have sworn I had a crystal gravy boat.”  Or when you’re trimming the tree and realize that you haven’t swapped out any ornaments since, well, ever. And though it never bothered you before, for whatever reason, you’re suddenly feeling that your Christmas tree is looking a bit worn this year. This is why we recommend summoning whatever shopping energy you might have left for 2012 and heading over to Halcyon House Antiques for their big sale this week.

Tips, Products, and Styles for Holiday Hair from Salon Method

With all of the holiday hullabaloo—that is, shopping, cooking, shopping, hosting, decorating, shopping, packing, wrapping, driving, and then shopping—getting your hair just so for the season (or a particular event) might not stand out as something that needs to be at the top of your To Do list. But we beg to differ. As anyone who’s ever made a well-timed salon appointment can tell you, that hour or so of enforced (and oh-so-welcome) relaxation can buy you some major energy reserves for later. After all, when you walk into a place, get your scalp massaged and your hair washed (like, really washed—by an expert), and then sit passively as you’re primped and made-over to perfection—you walk out both looking and feeling totally fresh and new. You’re ready to take on whatever challenges await you—and you’ll look great doing so. Which is why we’re recommending you give yourself the holiday gift of making an appointment (like, yesterday—they’re quite busy) at Salon Method in Ruxton.

Inspired Habitat: Oh Tannenbaum…Eco-Friendly Tree Alternatives

Maybe you don’t have the space. Maybe you’re going on vacation so you can’t do a “real” tree, and just don’t want to purchase and put up an artificial one. Or, maybe you want to go really green and forgo the traditional options in favor of something… alternative. We’ve scoured the web to find some great ideas for festive tree alternatives. Done right, these could all be very green indeed. Swap out regular lights for LEDs, add some eco-friendly ornaments and you’re good to go!

“Sweet Genius” Josh Rosen of Charm School Chocolates Visits Ma Petite Shoe

One of the great charms—if you will—of Baltimore is that for how small it sometimes seems, it’s actually full of surprises. And since so many folks are finding Baltimore to be a great place to start a small business, those surprises often take the form of smart and talented entrepreneurs—and the fabulous creations they’ve brought with them. One new local treasure is Charm School Chocolates (and its chef—the perfectly charming Josh Rosen, whom you might have seen last week on the Food Network’s Sweet Genius [um, footnote: he won!]). Smartly, Ma Petite Shoe (our favorite spot for an unparalleled selection of gourmet chocolates from around the world) has jumped at the opportunity to be one of the first Baltimore retailers to offer Charm School Chocolates—and boy, are we grateful. Josh will be at Ma Petite Shoe this Friday for the store’s weekly Chocolate Happy Hour from 6pm-9pm.

Gaze at the Same Wreaths as the Obamas with White House Wreaths from Dutch Floral Garden

No, you’re not having déjà vu. Yes, we were just raving about Dutch Floral Garden’s fabulous, unique arrangements a week or two ago. But that was pre-Thanksgiving, and this is the official all-out-holiday season. Dutch Floral Garden still has all the gorgeous, seasonal floral bouquets we spoke of before. But—this just in!—Dutch Floral Garden is offering exquisite holiday wreaths this season, and they are on special until December 15th.

But how does one choose a good wreath? Well, Dutch Floral Garden makes it easy. Their supplier for this year’s wreaths is the same one that the White House uses. Classy enough for you? We certainly hope so. The wreaths come in three different varieties—blue juniper, cedar and juniper, and mixed greens with pine cones and faux berries. See why we had to give them a mention?

Dutch Floral Garden is located in Belvedere Square at 515 East Belvedere Ave in Baltimore. For more information, visit www.dutchfloralgarden.com.
