Let it snow, we say! And also, bring on the flowers! Think these two things don’t go together? Think again. Sure, your beautiful summer blooms are now a distant memory, but luckily the folks at Ladew Gardens just don’t stop. And they’re going all out (as usual) for their holiday open house. December 13 – 15, you can enjoy “Christmas Through the Ages” at Ladew, where local floral designers and Garden Clubs have been invited to decorate the rooms of the circa 1747 Manor House. Deck the halls? More like deck the walls, tabletops, and fireplace mantels. And while you take it all in, you can enjoy complimentary hot cider and cookies, as well as an exceptional Greens Sale featuring hand-crafted fresh holiday decorations — wreaths, table arrangements and decorations — perfect for your home, or for bringing along as gifts for family. But wait. There’s more.
The weekend’s festivities feature live seasonal music performed by Maryland school children and other accomplished instrumentalists. And new this year, there will be extra special floral displays adorning the newly renovated Drawing Room, which has recently undergone extensive renovations to more accurately portray the original character of the room during the period from 1935 – 1960, when the manor house was the beloved home of Harvey Ladew. Now in its 33rd year, Ladew’s Christmas Open House has been called “one of Maryland’s most memorable and decorative holiday events.” And if weather permits (and we hope it does), you can look forward to an idyllic 60-acre nature walk around the property. Winter in Maryland doesn’t get much lovelier than this.
Ladew Topiary Gardens is located at 3535 Jarrettsville Pike in Monkton. Hours for the three-day Christmas Open House event are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For ticket information, call 410-557-9570 or visit www.ladewgardens.com.
