Christmas Village

catch of the day fish (2)It didn’t take long for Baltimore to get on board with the Christmas Village that sprung up a couple years ago and has become much beloved here ever since. This take on the German holiday tradition brings much light, merriment, and holiday spirit to West Shore Park starting this weekend, and all the way through Christmas. So be sure to bring the family down on Sunday for a great way to unwind from Thanksgiving madness and sail smoothly into Christmastime cheer. It all begins with an official visit from the Christkind (the traditional Christmas Angel) from Nuremberg Germany, a traditional prologue, and a meet and greet with the Christkind and Santa. Not to mention the tree lighting.

Unlike here, where it’s all about Santa, in Germany, the kids look forward to the Christkind’s visit. A fairy-like being, dressed in a gold and white robe, she’s the person who brings the Christmas gifts to children in other parts of the world. This year, a panel of judges and the people of Nuremburg actually elected the Christkind who will be visiting Baltimore. So it seems that Santa’s got some stiff competition. But then, the more the merrier when it come to gifting, right?

The big opening ceremony starts on Sunday at 2:15pm when the Christkind will sail along the waterfront on a decorated water taxi with holiday music playing, from Harbor East to Harborplace, where she will then meet Santa and he will accompany her to the Christmas Village’s outdoor area. Then, at 3:20 PM, the Christkind will officially open the market with her traditional prologue, accompanied by the Hereford High School Choir. You can take it all in throughout the day, including traditional German food and drink, as well as fabulous and unique shopping opportunities from crafters and vendors, and more entertainment than you’ll know what to do with. And of course, plenty of Christmas magic.

Christmas Village in Baltimore will be open November 27, 2014 through December 24, 2014 from 11 AM -7 PM Sunday through Thursday, and 11 AM – 8 PM Friday and Saturday.  For more information about Christmas Village in Baltimore, visit
