CNN’s Erin Burnett agreed with both President Obama and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in their labeling of some protesters as “thugs” in public statements about Baltimore’s unrest. City Councilman Carl Stokes took major issue with that.
“Isn’t it the right word?” Burnett asked Stokes.
“No, of course it’s not the right word to call our children ‘thugs,’” Stokes said. “These are children who have been set aside, marginalized, who have not been engaged by us. No, we don’t have to call them ‘thugs.'”
“But how does that justify what they did?” Burnett asked. “That’s a sense of right and wrong. They know it’s wrong to steal and burn down a CVS and an old persons’ home. I mean, come on.”
“Come on? So calling them ‘thugs?’ Just call them n—–s. Just call them n—–s.”
Burnett also caught flak from Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting over her dismissive and misleading reporting on Occupy Wall Street in 2011.
