Decanter: A Celebration of Maryland Wine and Racing

catch of the day fish (2)Spring is in the air—finally. And it’s a season when Maryland just shines; when it’s warm enough to start stepping out, enjoying some of our regions treasures. We’re ready to start soaking up some sun, enjoying our drinks outdoors, and of course, getting in our time at Pimlico. The folks at the Maryland Wineries Association are happy to accommodate. April 12 and 13, they bring us Decanter—which was one of the highlights of our social calendar last year. After all, a day at the races surrounded by local winemakers (and their wines), fine work by top artisans, live music, and great food can’t really be anything but fabulous. But there’s more to it than just a great time. Says Maryland Wineries Association Executive Director, Kevin Atticks, “Maryland wines and racing share some common themes…heritage, tradition and legacy…so we thought the combination would be perfect for audiences young and old alike.” We went last year, and we can tell you, it is.

Now in its fourth year, Decanter features live turf and dirt horse racing, which you can bet on, naturally. But unlike most days at Pimlico, during Decanter you can enjoy some of the state’s best wines from wineries like Knob Hall Winery, Great Shoals Winery, and our current go-to, Millstone Cellars. Of course, you can decide for yourself which local vintage deserves a spot on your wine rack; the vintners themselves will be on hand to provide wine tastings and answer questions. You can also browse the arts and crafts by vendors focusing on equine and wine-themed work. General admission includes all of this, but a special Decanter Pass includes an upgraded wine glass as well as samples of Decanter exclusive wines from each attending winery. That is to say, if you’ve always wanted the chance to be that person swirling a highly unique vintage in your glass, here’s your chance. And if that fantasy also includes sipping that wine while gazing down from the Grandstand, with a few bucks at stake on a thoroughbred, we really don’t know where else you’re going to make that happen.

Decanter: : A Celebration of Maryland Wine and Racing takes place April 12 and 13 at the Pimlico Race Course (5201 Park Heights Ave.) from 12 pm – 6 pm on both days.  General admission tickets are $30.00, and Decanter Passes are $50.00. Baltimore Fishbowl viewers can save $8 on admission by using code BaltFishbowl14. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit or call 410-252 WINE.
