For those with Italian roots, no Christmas tradition is quite as memorable (or deliciously unmissable) as the Feast of the Seven Fishes. And while some grandmothers out there still avidly prepare the six or seven or ten course feast each year, most of us will need to make reservations if we’re hoping to partake of this maritime-centric smorgasbord. As an Italian tradition, the Feast of the Seven Fishes makes perfect sense, coming from a country that’s largely coastline. And similarly, here in Baltimore, it’s the perfect way to get in your mandated Maryland quota of seafood while staying well within a traditional Christmas menu. Various restaurants around town and beyond offer prix fixe menus for the Christmas Eve meal, but for an authentic, delicious, and beautiful feast– we’re betting on Donna’s in Cross Keys.
You already know Donna’s for their coffee, salads, incredible catering, and more. And since they regularly serve up elegant but understated fare at each of their locations, it’s not the kind of place you necessarily think of when it’s time for an extravagant, six course meal. But then, maybe it should be. These folks know how to make the most of fresh, seasonal ingredients, and keep them light and healthy enough, while making sure that everything has that satisfying home-cooked sumptuousness that’s particularly important now that there’s a chill in the air.
Donna’s Feast of the Seven Fishes will be served Christmas Eve from 5pm-8:30pm at their Cross Keys Location (40 Village Square). For reservations and to view the compete menu, visit www.donnas.com.
