Fluid Situation: Water Main Break Near City Hall Closes Downtown Street

baltimore-city-hallIn the trenches of the Baltimore Dept. of Public Works, water main breaks come and go. But a 16-inch break is sticking around, and it happens to be right next to City Hall.

The break was first reported Wednesday morning, just south of the intersection of Gay St. and Saratoga St. It quickly rerouted downtown traffic patterns, which aren’t usually known for being fluid.

Crews have been working to repair the break, but the web of underground power lines and a concrete overlay is forcing it to take more time than expected. As of Thursday afternoon, DPW estimated Gay St. would be closed at least through the weekend. Meanwhile, water service is out for the businesses between Orleans and Fayette St.

Happy commuting!
