Reports circulated last week stating that Helen Bentley entered hospice. The statements were perhaps meant to indicate the former Congresswoman was nearing death, but Bentley had a strongly worded statement for all who would believe that this week.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Bentley’s statement said that “rumors of my imminent demise are greatly exaggerated.”
She apparently didn’t deny that she is receiving hospice care, but it seems as though she is looking to be around for a while, saying, “Dammit, I’m still right here.”
“Did I have a brush with the Master? You bet. But I beat him off,” she said, showing that her facility with words is still intact.
This is where we interject to offer a reminder that hospice care does not necessarily mean death is imminent. It is also a form of care given to further assist a patient exiting the hospital. Last week’s reports said Bentley left Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson prior to hospice last week, indicating that could be the case here. But only The Master knows for sure.
