Baltimore City is gathering on Saturday night to give love and support to one of their own. Melissa Kirby, a partner in Shine Creative and mother of two, suffered a series of strokes last year. At Clipper Mill Pool, friends and local businesses are getting together to raise money for her recovery.
Kirby, 42, was a community-oriented creative entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast. Then, one evening while jogging, she collapsed. She suffered a series of strokes that left her unable to move or speak. She has made progress over the last year, moving from a critical care unit to a sub-acute facility in Towson. She spoke a few faint words recently, and is beginning to be able to move her upper body. Kirby wishes to continue her recovery, but her insurance company has been denying requests for a higher standard of care.
Saturday night’s Illuminate Love + Light for Melissa benefit features food from some of the city’s notable restaurants like Woodberry Kitchen, Encantanda and Local Oyster, as well as Flying Dog Brewery and the Charmery. DJ Impulse will also be onhand to provide the tunes for dancing, and there will be a silent auction. All proceeds go to Kirby’s recovery.
