Baltimore Fishbowl will re-publish posts that have become relevant again on Throwback Thursday, beginning today.

Originally published April 8, 2016 – There are fewer than 10,000 members of the KKK, the most well-known hate group in the United States. And they’re not all living in the Deep South.

Photographer Peter van Agtmael spent time with KKK groups in rural Tennessee and Maryland last year; his troubling images of Klan weddings, hooded hangouts, and burning crosses make it clear that the era of the Klan is not behind us (although the group is far, far less powerful than it was at its height, when it counted millions of members).

van Agtmael doesn’t identify the location of the group more specifically, but according to the SPLC, there are two active KKK groups in the state: The Confederate White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in Baltimore County (Rosedale, to be precise), and the East Coast Knights of the True Invisible Empire (Annapolis). The Traditional Rebel Knights of the KKK, which was headquartered in Braddock Heights, Maryland, has taken down its website and is no longer listed on the SPLC list of KKK chapters.

The SPLC reports that there are currently 130 active chapters of the Ku Klux Klan in the US and hundreds more hate groups, including many in Maryland.  To see the full list, click here.

  1. Closer to home and meeting regularly in Druid Hill Park, the recent exploits of the Black Guerilla Family also negate the idea of the post-racial age. Racism is a two way street, despite the media’s failure to acknowledge it.

  2. Or is BGF an acceptable sort of racism, like the existence and agenda of the United States Congressional Black Caucus?

  3. I’m deeply sickened by the comments on this board. I suppose you are the ignorant types that voted for Donald Trump, who was elected by stirring racism, misogyny, bigotry, islamophobia and on and on. The man is dangerous and has nary a concept of how to be a President. Hope you all are millionaires because they are the only ones who’ll have taxes reduced. And I hope you don’t count on Medicare, cause that will be a goner if he has his way. Oh, and I hope you like paying for him to have Trump Tower secured because the man won’t deign to live in the White House. Jokes on you. I’m popping corn and watching Trump and his ilk screw it up so badly that everyone in the world will be out for him. We’ve had enough of your obstruction of a black President simply because of the color of his skin. He has more grace in his pinky than all of you deplorables put together. You probably call yourself patriots. What a joke. You’ve probably never been out of the country or maybe even to a different coast. Small-minded. It’s okay. Half of all the children born in this country are brown now. Do the math. You’re outnumbered and no one cares about what you want anymore because you are a relic of a dying era . And I am a white sixty year old housewife, in case you’re wondering.

  4. Rising Sun never had a chapter, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. There was an incident in 1999 where some out of area Klan groups were in rising sun passing out flyers. It got a lot of press, and the rumors of Klan activity persist to this day.
