Flesh-eating bacteria claimed the life of a man in Ocean City as the summer was ending.

According to OC Today, Mike Funk contracted the condition known scientifically as necrotizing fasciitis as he was preparing to close up his summer residence in Ocean City. The Vietnam veteran started showing symptoms after cleaning crab pots and pulling his boat in for the summer.

The disease is rare, and most threatening to people with weak immune systems. Shellfish can be a carrier. In this case, doctors believe Funk contracted the disease when water got in through an open sore.
