Here’s a nice reward for the new year. The National Aquarium is offering Marylanders a Pay What You Want Day as a way of helping to raise money for animal care while giving us all one more reason to be so glad we’re locals. We all know and love the aquarium, but the admission price can become prohibitive when you’ve got the spouse, the kids, kids’ friends, and who-knows-who-else in tow. So if you’ve got no plans for this Sunday, head down to the harbor (well ahead of the crowds, if you can) and pay literally whatever you choose for admission. You can even add a ticket to one of their fabulous 4D films for just $5. The aquarium works all year long to educate kids about the wonders of the ocean, and about our local seaside ecosystems. They also help preserve those ecosystems outside of their work as a tourist destination. Their exhibits illuminate the hidden underwater worlds that exist locally, as well as all the way across the oceans in any direction. Where else can you get a glimpse of sharks, dolphins, sloths, and brightly glowing, brainless jellyfish? Oh yeah, and did we mention that the aquarium is warm, even this time of year? You may think you’re going for the sharks and dolphins, but given the outdoor climate this past week, you may find yourself inexplicably drawn to the tropical rain forest this time around. Hmm.
The National Aquarium’s Pay What You Want Day is Sunday, January 11th. For details, visit www.aqua.org.
