A coin minted in 1792 sold for $1.175 million on Thursday night at an auction in the Baltimore Convention Center. According to Coin World, the “Birch Penny” is believed to be from the first run of American cents, thus making it ultra-valuable.
The collector who won the bid gets bragging rights on the night, but wasn’t the one who spent the most money on a penny this year. In January, Beverly Hills coin dealer Kevin Lipton laid down $2.5 million for a similar Birch Penny.
Your move, Lincoln.
