Prince’s surprise Baltimore concert, “Rally 4 Peace,” was met with a range of responses. Many appreciated Prince’s desire to create a “catalyst for pause and reflection following the outpouring of violence that has gripped Baltimore and areas throughout the U.S.” Others wondered what kind of “rally for peace” came with a cover charge. Yet others found the whole celebrity-savior thing problematic.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Prince finally disclosed three recipients of proceeds from the concert. One is the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics, which is “designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.”
The other two are city programs: YouthWorks, a summer jobs program for young people; and OneBaltimore, a public-private initiative to help residents find “temporary or permanent employment.”
