We’re always big fans of whatever Black Cherry Puppet Theater has going on. Since 1980, Black Cherry has been bringing the joy of puppetry to kids all over the city– through their community and school programs, and performances at their charming little theater across from Hollins Market. But over the last few years, Black Cherry has expanded its offerings to include a quarterly “puppet slam”– a cabaret of sorts, featuring short and wild puppet pieces from Baltimore and beyond. It’s always a raucously wholesome good time (though we have seen a few puppets get kind of racy– including a twerking marionette, courtesy of Kevin Sherry). Essentially, it’s a night of puppets for adults. This month’s Puppet Slamwich will feature musicians The Highland Hill Boys, as well as local artist/children’s-book-author/twerking-marionette-mastermind Kevin Sherry. Newcomers include Tryfuss Puppet Collective, Feral Woman, and Chris Puls. The great thing about these puppet slams is that on the one hand, you never know what to expect. But on the other hand, you always know you can expect something fun, funny, perhaps a little confusing, and that you most certainly won’t see anywhere else.
Black Cherry Puppet Theater’s next Puppet Slamwich takes place Saturday, March 7th at the puppet theater (1115 Hollins Street in Baltimore). For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit their website.
