As we are all well aware, major league teams can’t face each other in the postseason without friendly wagers between the mayors of their respective cities. In the wake of the Kansas City Royals’ four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Championship Series, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has had to suffer a terrible indignity: performing a pro-Kansas City parody of Lorde’s “Royals.”
It’s actually a pretty inventive arrangement, and speaks well for the talent at the Baltimore School for the Arts, whose students back up the mayor and — let’s face it — pretty much carry the song.
In addition to making this video, the mayor agreed to temporarily rename our blue crab cakes “Royal Blue Crab Cakes” (and send some to the mayor of Kansas City). She’s also on the hook to travel to Kansas City and read to local third graders as part of their reading initiative “Turn the Page KC.”
