The 2014 Maryland Film Festival is still a ways off, but regardless, this week we get a unique opportunity to catch a new film by one of our favorite local multimedia artists– Stephanie Barber. If you’re not familiar with Barber’s work, this week’s screening of her new film, Daredevils could be a great introduction. Her narratives dance between being weighted in play, emotionalism, story, and humor. All throughout, bubbles of intimacy are blown and popped, and begin to be blown again. It’s not quite your traditional narrative film, but it’s not just video art, either. If this sounds like the kind of unpredictable type of cinema you crave, be sure to catch it at this week’s special screening at Falvey Hall in MICA’s Brown Center.
Barber’s films and videos have has been screened nationally and internationally in solo and group shows at MOMA, NY; The Tate Modern, London; The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; The Paris Cinematheque; The Walker Art Center, MN; and MOCA Los Angeles, to name a few. And by her own admission, she doesn’t show work here in Baltimore all that often. That’s why we’ll be sure to make it out this Thursday, to support one of our favorite local filmmakers, and to encourage her to bring it back home more often.
Daredevils will be screened on Thursday, March 27th at 7:30pm at Falvey Hall in MICA’s Brown Center. For more information, visit www.daredevilsmovie.com.
