The Stoop Storytelling Gets Spooky

catch of the day fish (2)Storytelling has always been an integral part of American culture. And while new-fangled technology (you know, motion pictures and the like) certainly did its part to shove storytelling out of the cultural spotlight, it’s been making a big comeback in recent years. If you’re a fan of The Moth podcast, or even programs like This American Life, you know the power that can come from someone simply telling you a story while you just sit back and take it all in. The Stoop Storytelling Series is Baltimore’s own local version of that. Each Stoop evening features a theme, with folks just like you and me (but with a little extra bravery) getting up to tell their own personal, true stories on that theme. And coming up…. Halloween edition, of course.

Next Monday, you can get your yearly ghost story quota met with “That’s Incredible!: Stories about aliens, mystical experiences, and other strange-but-true happenings.” You can expect tales of ghosts, UFOs, flesh-eating bacteria, exorcism, and more. And of course it’s all true. Plus there will be live music from Baltimore band Eureka Birds, which may help take your mind of these spine-tingling tales enough to get to sleep. And best of all, if you think you’ve got a story that’s truly weird, unbelievable, or downright chilling, you can put your name in the hat and get to tell it yourself in just three short minutes– which could be the scariest part of the whole evening.

The Stoop Storytelling Series takes place at Centerstage. The next performance is Monday, October 20th. Cocktails and music start at 7pm, with storytelling at 8pm. Tickets are $20 or $70 for the entire season. For more information, visit
