ravensparadeNazr Williams, 17, is on trial for murder and attempted murder in the stabbing death of 15-year-old Deontae Smith immediately following the Ravens’ Super Bowl parade in 2013. The Baltimore Sun‘s Justin Fenton reports that the prosecution’s case relies almost entirely on the testimony of a single witness, and one who is getting immunity for his role in the fight in exchange for his cooperation. If you’re Williams’s attorney, the the single-witness case is a desperate move following a shoddy police investigation. If you’re the prosecution, it speaks to how difficult it can be to get anyone to speak up in a situation like this, with the witness only coming forward after the defendant “had hit him in the face with a belt buckle.”
