The late Robin Williams was notorious for his energetic — even batty — comedic performances. But in serious roles he could be intensely understated, as per these two clips from the actor’s much-lauded appearance on Homicide: Life on the Streets.
The episode is “Bop Gun,” written by David Mills and David Simon. Williams plays a man vacationing in Baltimore with his family when his wife is murdered in the course of a mugging. It’s somber content, to be sure. But it demonstrates the unlikely restraint of a performer who made his name redefining “over-the-top.”
