Rep. Elijah Cummings used his turn at the mic during the House’s hearing on Planned Parenthood to eviscerate Republicans for what he sees as disingenuous outrage.
The release of videos which purport to show a “criminal conspiracy to make money off of aborted baby parts [that] reaches to the very highest levels” of Planned Parenthood has ignited an effort among Republicans to defund the organization. On Tuesday, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards testified before the House Oversight Committee.
Republicans asked little about the videos, which Richards claims were “heavily doctored,” focusing instead on Richards’s salary and lobbying budget. That drew a strident rebuke from Cummings. The 10-term Democrat, representing half of Baltimore City and most of Howard County, tore into his Republican colleagues for their apparent selective outrage.
“I find it extremely hypocritical that Republicans criticize the salaries of Planned Parenthood officials when you have violated no laws,” Cummings said, addressing Richards, “especially while these same Republicans completely ignore the CEOs of huge companies that are actually guilty of breaking the law.”
Cummings went on to recount the unlawful activities of financial institutions which continue to receive “extensive federal support” and whose CEOs make enormous sums of money, without “any effort” from House Republicans “to strip these banks of their federal support.”
