Barbershop Harmonies
catch of the day fish (2)You can usually tell when a “con” (that is, a convention) is in town. Suddenly the light rail (and harbor, and Lexington Market, and everything else) is full of young men dressed as My Little Ponies (BronyCon) or people of all stripes dressed as Anime characters (Otakon). It can be a little disorienting, of course, but it can also fill one with a kind of civic pride. After all, if Baltimore is the kind of place that people can comfortably assemble for their not-quite-run-of-the-mill gatherings, we think that speaks pretty well of our city. Well, here comes a convention whose attendees may be less conspicuous– but which is certainly as worthy of notice as anything else we’ve seen all year. It’s the 68th annual Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition. For the uninitiated, that’s the world’s largest women’s barbershop harmony competition– 2015 edition.

This year’s convention has 46 quartets and 33 choruses busily preparing for five days of awe-inspiring, thrilling performances that will earn the best of the best Sweet Adelines’ treasured crowns and top titles. And this is serious business. The competition will feature two Grammy darlings: Neyla Pekarek, Sweet Adelines International member-at-large and cellist/vocalist for the Grammy-nominated band The Lumineers, and Marjorie Needham Latzko, a former member of Grammy-winning The Chordettes (for “Mister Sandman,” 1954). There are more competitions and performances than we could possibly list here– and they’re all open to the public. So run on down to the Convention Center real quick, and get your tickets to what’s practically an entire week of sweet, sweet sounds.

The Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition takes place November 3-8 at the Baltimore Convention Center. For a complete listing of events, or for more information, visit
