What would the holidays be without posters for some adaptation of Tchaikovsky and Petipa’s The Nutcracker hanging in shop windows?

The story of Clara and her colorful adventures saving her treasured nutcracker from the evil Rat Queen comes alive for Baltimore on Dec. 23 at the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric. The show will star the celebrated Ballet Theatre of Maryland, with live musical accompaniment from the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. It will be conducted by Julien Benichou, and joined by world-renowned violinist Kurt Nikkanen of the New York City Ballet Orchestra.

Two performances of The Nutcracker will be offered on Dec. 23, one at 1 p.m. and another at 5 p.m. Both shows commemorate the life of David Modell, a Baltimore community leader and philanthropist who died this past January. Audience members will be invited to join a celebration of Modell with festivities in the lobby before each show.
