Club Hippoโ€™s website accurately describes the Mt. Vernon bar as a โ€œcornerstone in the gay and lesbian community in Baltimore.โ€ By the end of the year, itโ€™s slated to become a CVS.

The Baltimore Brew broke the story that longtime owner Chuck Bowers was in negotiations to turn the nightclub he has owned since 1972 into a CVS. A statement provided to Baltimore Business Journal and the Baltimore Sun on Monday confirmed the news and said that the Hippo will close in the fall.

Located at Eager and Charles Sts., the clubโ€™s motto has been โ€œWhere everyone is welcome.โ€ The big dance floor has always helped keep this true. Last week, the club posted an announcement that itโ€™s planning the โ€œparty of the yearโ€ in August, serving a reminder that itโ€™s not a drug store yet.

  1. They are not closing “to make way for a CVS.” The owner is retiring, as it says in the Brew story. I think the headline should be accurate.

  2. another CVS to burn down?…when Baltimore needs more to bring it back from all the detachments ….we have soo much potential…lets tap in to all of our resources and history to make it as best as it can be..instead of jokes on late nite TV.
