What: Slick and modern with its dark wood floors, cool ceiling fans and fancy lighting, this home got great reactions at last Sunday’s open house. “Oh wow, super cool, it’s huge!” was the general idea — and it is. Enter into a big, open kitchen/dining area, beautifully lit with lots of storage (great for entertaining). Walk through and take the spiral staircase up to the gin-and-tonic rooftop deck. No water views, but two gazebos and a seating area, plus room for a grill and large-screen TV. The master suite and its good-sized bedroom are nice. There’s also an office/guest room on the main level, as well as one upstairs. The lower level is roomy, but doesn’t get much natural light. This is one of several recent offerings from local developer Building Character — two brothers who have made it something of a specialty to transform old row homes into stylish contemporaries, one building at a time.

Where: With one entrance on Cambridge Street and another on Fleet Street, this house really covers the waterfront. It’s nicely positioned just where Fells Point becomes Canton, which makes it all the more walkable and bikeable to local attractions. Within minutes are the waterfront promenade, the dog park, O’Donnell Square, Patterson Park and the grand Safeway that makes life in Canton possible. Slightly further away are Fells Point and Johns Hopkins Hospital.The appeal of Canton is that it’s a true neighborhood, like a small town within a larger city. And despite gentrification, authenticity abounds.

Why: A garage in Canton is worth its weight in gold.

Why Not: Layout’s a little choppy, with stairs at both ends of the house.

Would Suit: Super-cool, double-income, no-kids couple.
