With the latest test results pointing to a decline in the concentration of fecal matter concentrations in Baltimore’s waterways, there’s arguably never been a better time to take a paddle out on the city’s “crown jewel.”

If you decide to participate or watch today, you’ll be in good company, with hundreds of people expected to hop into kayaks and canoes (or onto stand-up paddleboards) to celebrate the harbor’s vitality. This year’s Floatilla, the city’s third ever, should bring a hefty crowd out to make a statement about the quality we should all be seeking for Baltimore’s harbor.

The five-mile ride from Canton to the Inner Harbor and back starts at 8 a.m., which should offer a window for safe paddling before today’s forecast storms. Next comes a rally in the Inner Harbor, followed by a party with food and music back in Canton.

Even with a soggy forecast, it’s all for a great cause. Just be sure to bring a rain jacket.

Paddle starts at 8 a.m. at Canton Waterfront Park; rally at Inner Harbor at 10:30 a.m.; and after party at Canton Waterfront Park at noon. More info here.
