Baltimore County Executive Johnny Oszlewski Jr. yesterday announced that the county purchased a 22.3-acre parcel of land in eastern Perry Hall for preservation.

The area, located at the northeast corner of Gerst Road and New Gerst Lane, was purchased for $3.07 million.

โ€œAcquisitions such as these not only preserve precious parkland, but provide opportunities for everyone to play where they live and work right now,โ€ said Recreation and Parks Director Roslyn Johnson in a statement yesterday.

โ€œCOVID has reinforced how important the outdoors is for both physical and mental health, and we are happy that this site will provide even more green space for Baltimore County,โ€ she said.

The acquisition, completed in partnership with Baltimore County Councilman David Marks, was made with funding from Marylandโ€™s Program Open Space (POS).

POS was established in 1969 under the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. It provides financial and technical assistance to local jurisdictions to plan, acquire, and develop open space areas and land for recreation.

Since 1970, the county has purchased more than 6,800 acres of parkland using POS funding.

โ€œPreserving open space in Baltimore County is a vital way to support a high quality of life for residents of all ages,โ€ Olszewski said in a statement.

The acquisition โ€œensures we are creating another vibrant space for the Perry Hall community to enjoy for years to come,โ€ he said.
