The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development announced today that 14 projects will share over $8.4 million in grants to help build affordable homes and improve infrastructure in Allegany, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Kent, Talbot, Washington, Worcester and Wicomico counties.

This year’s projects include renovating a family homeless shelter in Carroll County, rehabilitating a former school building to be used as a Boys and Girls Club in Dorchester County, improving senior housing in Frederick County, and creating 48 new affordable rental units in Charles County.

The federal Community Development Block Grant program will fund the grants, which provide resources to local governments nationwide for various community development projects, including housing construction, infrastructure improvements, and community facility programs.

Over the past five decades, the state has received millions of dollars through the CDBG program, which has helped to support over 1,100 projects.

โ€œThe Community Development Block Grant has received ongoing support in Congress for 50 years because it works. It works here in Marylandโ€™s counties, cities, and towns, and it works in communities in every state and territory,โ€ said Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day in a statement. โ€œMaryland will continue to be competent and compassionate stewards of CDBG resources and partner with local governments to achieve their redevelopment goals.โ€

The funds will also support the construction of 52 new affordable senior housing units in Kent County and the creation of 15 apartments in Washington County to house girls aging out of the foster care system.

The CDBG program is managed at the state level, with funds distributed to local governments through competitive grant applications.
