An exhibition using ocular devices to explore sight and perception will be on view at the Baltimore Jewelry Center from Jan. 31 through March 14.
Artist Laurel Fulton’s solo exhibition, titled “One Day You’ll See,” will feature ocular devices using lenses and mirrors to magnify, compress, flip, distort, and reflect what the viewer is seeing.
“When we say ‘I see,’ we mean ‘I understand’ and we often think ‘to see is to believe,’” Fulton said. “However, when we see, we are actually interpreting, determining, and evaluating the data our eyes send to us. As a result, there is no singular or universal way to interpret the world. Seeing is influenced by each individual’s experiences which modifies their own understanding and capacity for knowing.”
Originally from Colorado and currently located in Rochester, New York, Fulton is an object and image maker. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 2011 and her master of fine arts degree from the University of Georgia in 2020.
The nonprofit Baltimore Jewelry Center provides an academic program and community studio access program for metal and jewelry artists.
“The Baltimore Jewelry Center features one of the only art jewelry galleries in the Mid-Atlantic. Our exhibition program exposes the larger public to contemporary and traditional metal arts, and acts as a platform to promote and sell the work of local artists and national artists in the metalsmithing field,” said Baltimore Jewelry Center Director Shane Prada. “We’re excited to host this exhibition by Laurel Fulton, which pushes the boundaries of jewelry and metalsmithing and asks audiences to engage with pieces that modify their perceptions and sense of reality.”
“One Day You’ll See” will be on display in the Baltimore Jewelry Center’s gallery at 10 E. North Ave. from Jan. 31 through March 14.
There will also be an opening reception for the exhibition on Jan. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
