The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, of Laurel, has won a 2025 R&D 100 Award from R&D World Magazine for developing a next generation thermoelectric refrigeration technology that was recognized as one of the 100 most innovative emerging technologies in the research and development stage.
The refrigerator system runs on APL’s controlled hierarchically engineered super lattice structures (known as CHESS) – nano-engineered thermoelectric materials that transfer heat with significantly higher efficiency than conventional bulk thermoelectric materials.
