Baltimore will mark the unofficial start of the holiday season next month with the lighting of the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon Place.

The 54th annual monument lighting will take place Dec. 4. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m., with performances by Baltimore School for the Arts, OrchKids, the Peabody Brass Ensemble, and the Morgan State University Choir.

Allison Bailey, who has played the role of Glinda in the musical “Wicked,” will perform a number from the musical and a holiday favorite.

Then, at 8 p.m., fireworks will light up the sky over Mount Vernon.

There will be nearly 20 local food vendors selling sweet and savory food items. The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy will provide beverage concessions, including local beer, mead, wine, and hot mulled cider.

The monument lighting is organized by the nonprofit Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, which was founded in 2008 and entered a partnership agreement in 2012 with the City of

Baltimore to oversee restoration, maintenance and management of Baltimore’s Washington Monument and Mount Vernon Place’s park squares.

Mercy Medical Center is the presenting sponsor for this year’s event.
