If driving on I-95 wasn’t already unpleasant enough for you, try venturing south of Richmond, Va., late next month. You’ll likely be greeted by 10-by-15-foot Confederate flag waving on 50-foot pole, courtesy of the heritage group Virginia Flaggers, who have leased a bit of land off the highway expressly for that purpose.
Despite the flag’s strong association with American slavery, Virginia Flaggers founder Susan Hathaway argues that it will be a symbol of inclusivity. “This will tell people that everyone is welcome,” she said.
Somehow I’m skeptical.
I think the rebel flag would need one hell of a makeover to become a symbol of diversity. Let’s see. What about this:
