CCBC Honors scholars are discovering a level of academic rigor and opportunity typically associated with elite four-year institutions.

“So, who wants to go to South Africa for free next year?”

Hands shot up across the room at a recent CCBC Honors College open house.

Adrianne Washington, executive director of the Honors College, was offering prospective scholars a glimpse of the innovative opportunities that could be available to them, such as a fully funded international study trip focused on Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy.

The CCBC Honors College is designed to expand what students believe is possible for themselves and their education. It combines rigorous academics with the accessibility of a community college education. Admission is based on a holistic review of academic performance, intellectual potential, leadership experience and motivation for academic success.

The Honors College is tuition-free for Baltimore County residents and covers:

  • Mandatory fees
  • Textbooks
  • Educational travel connected to academic study

Out-of-county and international students may also qualify for competitive scholarship support.

But the experience extends far beyond cost savings.

From their first year, students take part in small, discussion-based classes, research opportunities and mentorship that many students at larger institutions may not encounter until much later in their college careers. Honors faculty serve as both instructors and mentors. Dedicated Honors spaces on campus give students places to study, collaborate and build community.

Beyond the classroom, students engage in cultural, social and research activities tied to their coursework. They also take part in immersive summer research experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world settings, from university labs to community-based and global projects.

The result is learning that challenges students academically while giving them the support to grow with confidence.

“Going to a community college, you’re a ‘somebody’ that your professors know about,” says Leah Goodman, a CCBC Honors student studying interior design. “Honors has taught me how to study efficiently and be a better public speaker, leader and listener.”

For Robert Toffry Jr., an Army veteran who enrolled at CCBC at age 49, the program opened the door to experiences he never expected to pursue.

“The Honors College has helped me stretch out of my comfort zone,” he says, pointing to travel opportunities, public speaking and close relationships with faculty and peers.

For many students, the Honors College becomes a launchpad to four-year universities.

“Once our honors students graduate, they are ready to transfer to the universities of their choice and contribute at a high level on day one,” Washington says.

Many students receive strong transfer offers and financial aid packages, often allowing them to complete their bachelor’s degrees with little to no debt.

Ka’la Watkins, an Honors alumna who began CCBC with a GED, is now attending Georgetown University on a full-ride scholarship.

“The opportunities are truly infinite,” she says.
