The New/Next Film Festival, taking place the first weekend of October at the Charles Theatre, has announced its full lineup of more than 160 films. This is the fourth year of the festival.
From Oct. 1 through Oct. 4, across the historic theater’s five screens, the film festival will host more than 30 emerging titles, six world premieres, and five United States or North American premieres. Movie fans can expect more than 100 cutting-edge short films and features like “Chronovisor,” “Everytime,” “La Gradiva,” “The Lorraine,” and “Zi.” The festival will also include the newly restored films “Sitting Ducks” and “The Shepherds of Berneray.”
New/Next opens on Thursday, Oct. 1 with “Eternity One,” a Baltimore-made film by Marnie Ellen Hertzler. The documentary spotlights a disappearing Chesapeake Bay island community, with an original score by Baltimore’s dream pop duo Beach House. The festival closes on Sunday, Oct. 4 with “The Projectionist,” a film by Alexandre Rockwell. The story is of a haunted old man reckoning with his past through the lens of a forgotten movie theater. Rockwell will be in Baltimore for the showing and joined by cast members of the film.
World premieres include “Riptides,” a dark comedy by Alex Karpovsky starring Steve Little; “You Don’t Know My Name,” a personal documentary by Tommy Franklin; and “The Tower,” a DIY regional-cinema film by Auden Lincoln-Vogel and Philip Rabalais.
North American premieres include “Kiss and Be Friends,” a comedy set in Libson; “The Arrow at Rest at Every Instant of its Flight” by Theodore Schaefer; and more.
