These are aerie times on the Eastern Shore. A group of 13 bald eagles were found dead in Federalsburg on Sunday, and it’s not clear how they were killed.
Maryland’s Natural Resources Police found the deceased eagles in Federalsburg, and reported them to federal authorities. According to the Washington Post, the bodies of the birds of prey showed no signs of trauma. Authorities offered a $2,500 reward for information, but weren’t willing to say how they may have been killed.
The eagles are no longer on the endangered species list, but their status as the national bird means they are still protected by federal law. Three of the eagles were mature, meaning they looked like the recognizable symbol of freedom, Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources spokeswoman Candy Thomson told the Post.
