Vice President Joe Biden was charged with leading a “moonshot” effort to find a cure for cancer by President Barack Obama at this year’s State of the Union address. This week, Biden will visit Baltimore’s own cancer research powerhouse.
Biden is set to visit Johns Hopkins Medicine on Tuesday and give remarks, according to the Baltimore Sun. The visit comes as the White House is seeking $1 billion in funding for a cancer research effort led by the Vice President. Biden also toured Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center last week.
The task of finding a cure for cancer is intensely personal for Biden. His son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer last year.
