The city official who hired a lawyer that was found to have neo-Nazi views is out.

In a brief statement at 3 p.m. on a summer Friday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said George Nilson will no longer be City Solicitor, effective on Wednesday, August 24. Nilsonโ€™s office signed off on a contract with Glen Allen, a lawyer who was himself fired on Thursday following revelations from the Southern Poverty Law Center about his past ties to a neo-Nazi group. Allen was under contract to represent the police department in a wrongful arrest case.

The mayorโ€™s statement did not directly tie the end of Nilsonโ€™s tenure to the incident with Allen, and did not give a reason for Nilsonโ€™s departure.

The city solicitor is essentially the chief legal advisor for the city government. Nilson will be replaced by Deputy Solicitor David Ralph.
