For many families, a child’s first summer at overnight camp marks the beginning of something special. Days are filled with friends, activities, laughter, and shared traditions, all within a community where children feel supported, try new things, and build lasting friendships. When a first camp experience is done well, it becomes something children talk about long after the summer ends and look forward to returning to year after year.

At Capital Camps, that first experience begins with Yalla, our entry point program for younger and first time overnight campers. Yalla is intentionally designed to make a child’s introduction to camp feel joyful, manageable, and meaningful.

Yalla is not simply a shorter session or a starter version of camp. It is a carefully crafted experience built around what first time campers need to thrive. Cabins are intentionally smaller, helping campers feel known and form close friendships quickly. Before the summer begins, Yalla campers have opportunities to connect with their cabinmates, building excitement and familiarity before arrival day.

Once camp begins, the opening days focus on intentional friendship building activities that help campers feel part of a group right away. As campers settle in, they practice age appropriate independence with close guidance and encouragement, from managing daily routines to making choices about activities. The daily schedule balances favorite camp experiences like sports, arts, swimming, and special programs with moments of community time. As a Jewish camp, Shabbat is a highlight of the week, bringing campers together through shared meals, music, and dancing that help create a sense of belonging.

What makes Yalla especially powerful is what happens beneath the surface. Families often share that what their child brings home is not just stories and songs, but small signs of growth, such as a new tradition, more confidence in daily routines, or pride in having done something new independently. These moments reflect the care and intentionality that define the Yalla experience.

Families are important partners in this process. In the weeks leading up to the summer, parents meet virtually with camp professionals to share insights about their child’s personality, interests, and needs, helping ensure a thoughtful and supportive transition into camp.

Yalla is designed not only as a joyful first summer, but as the beginning of a larger camper journey. Alongside the focus on fun and belonging, we intentionally plan for how campers grow over time, building confidence, independence, and leadership. A strong first summer lays the foundation for years of connection, growth, and community to come.
