The Walters Art Museum is now accepting applications for Fashion Remix: Art Inspiring Designers, an initiative that invites local fashion designers to create original fashion based on art at the Walters.

Designers use the art on display from the Waltersโ€™ collections to create unique fashion in a demonstration of past works continuing to provide lasting inspiration. Finalists receive a stipend of $500 up front to cover the cost of materials and $500 in August for participating in the initiative.ย They also have the chance to present their wearable designs in a public celebration at the museum as part of Baltimore Fashion Week, which takes place Aug. 10-14, 2026.

Fashion Remix is a creative initiative highlighting how historic art inspires new forms of expressions. It celebrates Baltimoreโ€™s creative community and connections between past and present. This yearโ€™s program draws a line between fashion, history, and storytelling while the Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture exhibition is on view at the Walters, April 18โ€“Aug. 9, 2026.

Baltimore-based fashion designers of all backgrounds are encouraged to submit their materials for consideration. Applications are open April 1โ€“May 3, 2026. Requirements for application include the following:

  • A brief artist bio (150-250 words)
  • A designer statement (150-250 words)
  • A portfolio with samples of previous work (5-10 images)
  • A written concept response to an artwork from the Walters collection (300 words)
  • Preliminary sketches or visual concepts
  • A statement of cultural thoughtfulness
  • Confirmation of Baltimore City or County residency
