Mayor Brandon M. Scott invites Baltimoreans all around the city to join him in celebrating International Placemaking Week during the “Art After Dark” event taking place on Thursday, June 6 from 7 pm – 11 pm.
“Art After Dark: An Evening of Live Art and Music on Lexington” will be an evening of creativity and community co-hosted by the Mayor’s Office, Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) and Whitney Frazier, of WGF Studio.
This free event invites people to watch an array of street artists, muralists, and graffiti writers transform the old Lexington Street retail corridor into dynamic works of art. The artists will create an immersive visual experience directed by Terry Kilby from Evergreen Digital Imaging, involving projections onto an adjoining wall while the artists create.
Participating artists include Gaia, Pablo Machioli, Bryan Robinson, Wendell Shannon, and Adam Stab. DJ Impulse will provide music.
“Art After Dark” is integral to Scott’s Downtown Rise Initiative and graffiti task force efforts. “The event is designed to foster community connections and demonstrate the transformative impact of urban art in revitalizing neighborhoods,” reads the press release.
The Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture focuses on creating a Baltimore where arts and culture flourish while local artists, cultural organizations, and community projects are supported. The office aims “to bring the joy of art and culture to every corner of Baltimore. From local art fairs & festivals to city-wide music festivals, we strive to make arts accessible to all,” reads the website. “We work on transforming public spaces into vibrant cultural hubs. This effort includes the commissioning of public art, revitalization of neighborhoods, and encouraging community-driven art projects.”
International Placemaking Week is a global gathering featuring workshops, panels, tours, and networking that connects urban planners, designers, community leaders, and residents. They discuss best practices, share experiences, and create innovative strategies for transforming public spaces into vibrant and inclusive environments reflective of their communities.
The “Art After Dark: An Evening of Live Art and Music on Lexington” celebration will include food trucks in addition to the music and live artistic transformation of the shopfronts on Lexington Street.
The event will take place on Thursday, June 6 from 7 pm – 11 pm at the Meadow at 200 Park Avenue, Baltimore, MD.
