Baltimore Fishbowl won seven awards in the Maryland, Delaware, and District of Columbia Press Association Contest this week for stories published in 2020. This was Baltimore Fishbowlโs second year competing in this contest, in which we entered in Division O for online news.
Like communities across the nation and the world, the Baltimore region found itself rocked by the coronavirus pandemic. Several of our winning pieces reflect the challenges and changes that have surfaced this past year.
Former Managing Editor Brandon Weigel won first place and second place in the Sports Feature category for his Q & A with a local horse trainer H. Graham Motion and for his story on Orioles’ workers asking the organization for economic relief during the pandemic.ย
Associate Editor Marcus Dieterle won first place in the General News Story category for his piece, They feel like sitting ducks.โ Coalition calls for state to reduce number of inmates amid pandemic. Marcus also won second place in the Features Profile category for his story on Clavel chef Carlos Rabaโs Brazilian jiu-jitsu studio in Remington.
Advertising Director Nicole Allen and contributor Marian McCusker won first place in the Community Service Program category for the โCoping with Coronavirusโ program.
Freelance writer Lawrence Lanahan’s story on Port Covington won second place in the Growth and Land Use category.
Freelance writer Ed Gunts won second place in the Business News category for his story on Hampden Junque closing.
