The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will perform a free Symphony in the City concert at Johns Hopkins University featuring the conducting debut of their new assistant conductor, Jiannan Cheng, and to celebrate the universityโs 150th anniversary.
The community concert will be held on Nov. 19 at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicineโs Turner Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The program will consist of autumnal works by underrepresented composers and well-loved favorites alike. Fanny Mendelssohnโs Overture in C major, Samuel Coleridge-Taylorโs Novelletten, Florence Priceโs Suite of Dances, and more will be performed.
โIt is an honor to join the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra family this season
and even more special to make my official debut on a Symphony in the City concert โ a series so deeply rooted in community,โ Cheng said in a statement. โThis program brings together music of tenderness, charm, and joy, and I am especially moved to share works by composers whose voices deserve to be heard more widely. I look forward to connecting with our Baltimore neighbors through this performance.โ
The Symphony in the City series aims to bring music directly to the people of Baltimore, honoring its roots as an orchestra founded by the city for its residents. The series intentionally aligns concerts and venues with community celebrations.
This event is presented in partnership with Johns Hopkins University. In addition to hosting this Symphony in the City concert, the university will gift hundreds of Hopkins students with chances to see the BSO all season via the BSOโs Student Select program.
The Student Select program enables students to see all BSO Classical Collection concerts for free, offers specially discounted tickets to Popular and Celebrations Collection concerts, along with the chance to bring a friend for only $10. Normally students pay $45 for the program.
โWeโre thrilled to welcome the BSO to Johns Hopkins for this special performance,โ said Lisa Ishii, M.D., M.H.S., Senior Vice President of Operations for Johns Hopkins Health System. โItโs an evening that showcases the best of Baltimoreโs talent and spirit.โ
The Turner Auditorium at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is located at 720 Rutland Ave., Baltimore, MD.
The program will run approximately 60 minutes and will not have an intermission. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. The BSO website has more information on tickets and concerts. The full program is listed below.
