This week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) authorized booster shots of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

Booster shots of the Pfizer vaccine were authorized in September.

The CDC is allowing people to get a booster shot of a vaccine from a different brand than their initial dose(s).

There have been a total of 253,009 COVID-19 booster shots administered in Maryland, including 55,489 since last Friday.

Of the initial doses of coronavirus vaccines, 60.78% of Marylanders received both doses of a two-dose vaccine and 5.112% received a single-dose vaccine.

Maryland has confirmed a total of 554,456 positive coronavirus cases as of Friday, including 5,713 cases newly recorded since last Friday.

Meanwhile, Maryland has recorded a total of 4,374,105 negative coronavirus tests to date.

A total of 10,554 Marylanders are confirmed to have died from coronavirus, including 104 people whose deaths were recorded in the last seven days. There are also 231 Marylanders whose deaths are suspected to be related to the virus.

Maryland’s seven-day average positivity rate sits at 3.21% as of Friday.

There are currently 650 Marylanders hospitalized due to COVID-19, including 496 in acute care and 161 in intensive care.

Of the state’s acute care patients, 492 are adults and four are children. Of the intensive care patients, 158 are adults and three are children.
