Miniskirts_in_snow_storm-thumb-400x389We’ve heard about the chance of major snow all week, and it’s only seeming more likely as we get closer to the day when it’s supposed to arrive. Among the developments: the storm got a name, the National Weather Service issued a Blizzard Warning on Thursday, and Gov. Larry Hogan took steps to get emergency operations working together.

Winter Storm Jonas seems like it’s a meme depicting at least one of the popstar brothers waiting to happen. But outside the of the Internet, it’s being taken a bit more seriously. The latest sign that it’s going to be bad came in the form of a Blizzard Warning forecast on Thursday morning, calling for up to 24 inches of snow in Baltimore City, and 18-24 in. in the suburbs from Friday night into Saturday. Whiteout conditions could also be part of the package from high winds.

Here is the National Weather Service’s “most likely” snowfall total map, with purple and pink representing 18-29 inches.

As a result, Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency effective Friday morning. The declaration basically frees of all of the resources that leaders feel like they need to prepare ahead of the storm and dig out once it’s over. BGE is also taking precautions for power outages, calling in an additional 900 contractors as it prepared.

Cancellations are also starting to come in. The Garth Brooks concerts scheduled for Friday and Saturday night at Royal Farms Arena have been postponed until next weekend.

Colleges were also adjusting move-in times as students return for a new term. Towson University closed for the weekend and postponed move-in until Jan. 25, while Morgan State opened its dorms early on Thursday morning to give students a chance to return ahead of the weather.

And you’re advised to stock up on supplies as well as patience, as it’s also time to get ready for the chair battle that will ensue after this first snowfall of the winter.

Baltimore Fishbowl will update as more information comes in.
